"Predictions are the road to Perdition..."

Stage 9.5 - Rest Day/Transfer Day

The riders transferred down to the southeast of France today and have
already had their warmup rides and been tucked into bed after eating
more pasta than an Olive Garden has in inventory, and will face a
relatively flat stage on Wednesday - a couple rises in the roadway along
the road - that would probably leave us all gasping for breath - and
then a straight level shot to the finish at Pau.

But, the day after....oh my - it's what is contributing to make this an
odd set of stages in the Tour of 2002. Stage 11 will be a cruncher,
climbing the Hors Category Col d'Aubisque and finishing on La Mongie, a
1st Category Climb. Stage 12 doesn't have any single climb as truly
nasty as the previous day's - it's just that there's 5 of 'em - with an
HC finish at Plateau de Belle. Stage 13 could be considered a downhill,
but you'd have to discount the fact that the peloton will cover three
categorized climbs before the 100 km steadily easy descent to the coast
city of Beziers. Stage 14 will feature the mountaintop finish on Mt.
Ventoux, after 221 km of riding. There's little else to break up the
monotony that day - it will be a climb-fest to the finish after a mind
and leg dulling dead-flat middle section.

And then they are out of the Pyrenees. They even get a rest day.

But, there's no time to take off the 12-23 (ok, that's the climbing gear
for these guys...)(well, maybe a 12-25 if they aren't of the bird-boned
variety...) Into the jaws of the Alps head the riders, with a warmup on
Stage 15 with 7 categorized climbs (2's and 3's), and a finish on the
Category 1 Les Deux Alpes - where Pantani actually dropped a bonked
Ullrich in 1998. Stage 16 is another grinder, with the Col du Galibier,
Cole de la Madeleine and a finish at La Plagne - all three are HC
climbs, if you are keeping track. More climbs on the next two stages
leading up to the Stage 19 Individual Time Trial, which features -
surprise - a 1,000 foot twisting climb in the first half of the 50 km
course.

Then -- BAM -- onto the Champs-Elysees in Paris and the race is over.

Clearly, this is not yer poppa's Tour. But, it will not catch Lance by
surprise. To state the obvious, he plans for this race with meticulous
detail. To worrry about half a minute when stages loom that could cause
an unprepared rider to lose half an hour would be silly. Again, I would
mention the article that Chris Carmichael wrote, in which he said that
they had changed Lance's training this year to de-emphasize the
flat-land time trial speed in favor of climbing. Just to show a great
deal of favoritism, hopefully all of the hand-wringing and worrying
about whether getting caught behind an early crash has prevented Lance
from gaining the Yellow Jersey after the Time Trial. It's who wears it
into Paris that counts.

The other part of the Tour equation is the competition. Certainly, we
learned from this year's Giro d'Italia that strange things can happen
when the favorites disappear all sorts of riders who consider themselves
out of contention suddenly begin to ride above their perceived limits.
With Ullrich out of the picture, riders suddenly fancy their chances of
a podium finish a bit more, and such riders as Kelme's Santiago Botero
and ONCE's Igor Gonzalez de Galdeano have pushed themselves to excellent
efforts so far. These are not new names in the hierarchy of the bicycle
racing, but we're now viewing them as challengers to the reign of
Armstrong. It's making for great racing.

Frankly, the sport is stronger for it. No one wants to see a rollover.
It certainly isn't enough for Lance to show up - his training, focus and
efforts have to be worlds away from our own. The beauty of cycling is
that when the roads turn upwards, and the pretenders and domestiques are
shaken out the back, nothing obscures the effort that is being made for
victory. So, we shall see what awaits.

In the meantime, here are some stats to chew on:

Tech-Geek stuff -
Finally go this report settled on the right server, so the rest of the
Tour should be coming from the correct email address -
editor@cyclofiend.com - which is a good one to use if you want to
comment, complain or ask questions.

If you know someone that wants to get these coffee-driven missives, they
can go to the following page to subscribe:

http://lists.cyclofiend.com/mailman/listinfo/race-report

and I should have a direct link added to the www.cyclofiend.com pages in
the next couple of days.

You can also change your settings, unsubscribe or generally muck around
with your subscription at the same page:

Thanks for reading!
